Taxonomic remark Previously a class within Chlorophyta. Originally just including the macroscopic stoneworts (Charales), Mattox and Stewart (1984) showed that a number of microscopic groups including desmids had affinities with this class rather than with the remaining Chlorophyceae. Placement in a separate division (=phylum) dates from Migula, 1897, and was followed by Pappenfuss (1955), Grambast (1967) and Tappan (1980), and is now generally accepted, as per e.g. Ruggiero et al., 2015.
