Taxonomic remark Original spelling "Conjugatae". The names Conjugatophyceae and Zygnematophyceae have both been used for this class. Guiry, 2013 preferred Conjugatophyceae, however Cheng et al., 2019 give a number of reasons why Zygnematophyceae is preferred, which is now reflected is the use of the name Zygnematophyceae in AlgaeBase, 2021 version.
