Taxonomic remark This was published before the validation of the names of three species (l.c. 1: 1-14, t. 1-3. 1 Jul 1831) by Witham in 1833. (Index Nominum Genericorum). Doweld, 2013, proposed its rejection on grounds of nomenclatural stability, then subsequently (2017) a formal acceptance of its valid publication status. The Nomenclature Committee for Fossils (2020) voted to recommend that the name Pinites was validly published, but not that it should be rejected, on the grounds that its type species Pinites eggensis was not considered by Doweld and did not threaten Pitys. They commented that the distinction between Pinites and Peuce Lindley & W. Hutton, 1832 "was likely a preservational artefact" but that no formal synonymization had yet been proposed; that being the case, the genus in IRMNG is placed in Araucariaceae (as per Peuce); the latter is presently treated as a synonym of Agathoxylon, per Rößler et al., 2014. However, Philippe & Bamford, 2008 state that the lectotype is Cordaitalean. (Not further researched) [details]
