Taxonomic remark This name (without publication year) as given in Philippe & Bamford, 2008, along with the remark: type from the Carnian of Stuttgart area (Csaki and Urlichs, 1985), not reviewed; it is advisable not use this genus before reinvestigation. [Many of Scheuchzer's names were pre-Linnean but it is presumed that this one post-dates 1753.] The name "Lithoxylon" apparently first dates from Edward Lhwyd, 1699, literally meaning "fossil wood" in Latin. ING does not include Scheuchzer's name, but cites (presumably different) uses of this name by G.F. Jaeger, 1827 and by Endlicher, 1840. IFPNI (international Fossil Plant Name Index) gives the earliest "valid" usage as Lithoxylon J.F. Krüger, 1825 (not further researched). [details]
