Taxonomic remark Myllys et al., 2026 state: Micarea has formerly been assigned to the Lecanoromycetes, as the type genus of the family Micareaceae (Hafellner, 1984; Eriksson & al., 2004). Using mtSSU rDNA data, Andersen & Ekman (2005) demonstrated that the “core” group of Micarea (with Brianaria excluded), characterized by a micareoid photobiont, is paraphyletic because Pilocarpaceae, a group of predominantly tropical foliicolous lichens, is nested in the genus (Pilocarpaceae is hereafter referred to as Ectolechiaceae Zahlbr., which is the correct name for the family. Pilocarpaceae is an illegitimate name and Byssolomataceae used in Index Fungorum is a later synonym: Robert Lücking, pers comm.). [details]
